Mindset Over Matter: How to Approach Online Network Marketing to Achieve the Best and Fastest Results

When you try to save time by skipping such steps as researching your niche, planning your site concept, and developing a monetization model, then the result is not the high performing, income-generating website you envisioned, but rather a lonely, desolate website that just sits on the web without attracting visitors or producing income.

The time you spend in the initial stages of planning your website and doing keyword research, pays off (literally and figuratively) down the road.

All too many network marketers turning to the Internet for help get attracted to one Get Rich Quick scheme after another.  It is a recipe for disaster.

You cannot build a successful SBI! website and online network marketing business with a Hare Mindset!.

  • Get out a calendar. Write down your goals for 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year.  It is very do-able to have your website up and 30-pages of keyword focused content written in 3 months.  Depending on your current knowledge of the web and how much time you have to devote to your SBI! website, you may be able to have your 30 pages up sooner.
  • Set a Schedule. Consistent action is the most important component of your schedule.  Working on your website one day a week is not enough.  It is better to work for an hour a day than 7 hours one day a week.  Ideally you can work a couple of hours every day or every other day.  Whatever you decide, schedule the exact days and the hours of the day you will be working on your SBI! website and stick to it.  Example:
  • Lisa: When I started, I got up at 5 a.m., worked for 2 hours before work and then limited watching television in the evenings so I could use an hour of that time too.
  • Alicia: I took a 10-day chunk of my Christmas vacation time and worked for 4 hours every morning, determined to get the framework of my SBI! site “up”.
  • Do not get distracted: Turn off your IM, email alerts, phone.  Unsubscribe from mailing lists, especially affiliate marketing lists.  Any email that says “act now!”, “only 24 hours left”, etc are marketing techniques that are extremely effective at grabbing the “hares”.  These will waste your time and money.  You can always file these emails away and come back to them in a few months.
  • Learn effective ways to deal with frustration and overwhelm. Exercise routines, healthy eating, regular breaks, fresh air, and laughter.
  • Be accountable: Use the SBI! 10-Day Action Guide checklist, find a study buddy, participate in regular training tutorials, and write out your goals and the timeframe (even the date!) within which you want to accomplish each.
  • Make it FUN! This is your business!  Celebrate milestones, Selecting a domain name, putting up your homepage, submitting your sitemap, 10 pages of content, 30 pages of content, adding RSS, each step is getting you closer to your ultimate goal of building a successful business.

How the Acupuncturist Met the Internet Guru and the Sales Queen

Sales QueenI hope you read Alicia’s post last week called, How the Internet Guru and the Sales Queen Met.

Wouldn’t you have loved to have been a ‘fly on the wall’ during that very first phone consultation between Ann Sieg, the Internet Guru, and Alicia Bausley, the Sales Queen?!

I am sure neither of them knew the deep friendship and strong business bonds that would grow from that very first phone call.

It makes you think, doesn’t it? When you pick up the phone to do consultative selling, you just never know what business friendships and relationships will develop.

And I guarantee neither Ann nor Alicia predicted joining forces with an acupuncturist!  Sometimes even I wonder how I got myself here.  (But just between you and me, I pinch myself every day because I can hardly believe my good fortune!)

The thing is, I am probably not all that different from you.

You see, I was not interested in gurus or queens in October 2007 when I was learning how to use the web to market my acupuncture practice.

I was happily learning how to build my very own Site Build It! website.  I was super proud of myself for actually creating a website that was earning me money!  Especially because I was a total web novice.  I was content to just keep building my acupuncture website.  End of story.

That is, until Ken Evoy of SiteSell, Inc., made an interesting post in the Site Build It! Forums.

If you are an SBI!er, you may remember Ken introducing us to a network marketing expert named Ann Sieg.  According to Ken, Ann had apparently unraveled the puzzle of how to generate an endless amount of qualified leads using the power of the Internet.

Ken does not endorse just anyone. So I paid attention.   He said that Ann Sieg bases her business on over-delivering quality information and offering value to her customers.  Hmm… that was very consistent with SBI!’s approach and it appealed to me.

Moreover, Ann taught network marketers how to shift their thinking from working for their MLM to becoming independent, marketing-focused entrepreneurs.  I liked hearing that too!

I started to wonder if I could actually fulfill my dream of multiple sources of residual income by following Ann Sieg’s system.

I decided that the only way I would know is if I gave it a try!

So I bought The Renegade Network Marketer ebook and attended the two live web classes on “How to Put the Net into Network Marketing” by Ken Evoy and Ann Sieg.

Ann Sieg said something very interesting in those web classes that changed my life.

You’ll never believe what happened.

Ann called me!  And Ken emailed me!  They both gave me their full support to go ahead with the ebook.  I thought I had it made!

I had never written an ebook before and did not know anything about marketing or autoresponders.  I just did the best I could and put it ‘out there’.

Fortunately it landed in the hands of The Sales Queen, Alicia Bausley.  Alicia read my ebook and immediately called to invite me to join her on a “little project”.  That project was to write an ebook called, “How to Build Your MLM Business” with 6 other members of her team.

Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight . . . Online Network Marketers Are you Singing A Goodnight Lullaby?

As online network marketers who may be struggling to get your business going I wanted to share an important marketing tip and at the same time, make you smile.  So here it goes… I watched this video of these adorable boxer puppies being sung to sleep (and unless you are just completely heartless, this just HAS to move you).

As I watched this video I couldn’t help but think that so many network marketers are doing the exact same thing with their MLM. That is, singing their audience to sleep.

Now you may think your own private song and dance show about your MLM products or company is taking your business and you to celebrity-ville, but in reality are you a bit ‘off tune’?  What I mean is, “are you singing for the right audience?”

Here’s a group that DID sing for the right audience (us baby boomers, in particular!):

I’m talking about the right target audience here!  The Spaniels didn’t put their audience to sleep! No way, in fact their song reached the U.S. top Pop 30 chart because their audience couldn’t get enough of their singing..

What’s A Target Audience?

Target Audience.  It’s one of the most misunderstand phrases for new online network marketers.  And it’s a shame, because it takes them all the way back to old school methods of network marketing – where we were taught to approach anyone and everyone about our product and our opportunity (at the same time!).

Ouch!

When you ‘sing’ your song to your target audience, you want them to sit up and take notice.  You do NOT want to sing them to sleep, where they click off your website or blog, because the ‘song’ isn’t right for them.

Here’s an example:

I could have titled this page, “How to Fix the Fuel Pump on your Car”

What would that one headline have done for you?

Well, quite frankly, my target market is network marketers who need expert help and guidance to build a successful online business.  So, that headline certainly would NOT get people to my blog or website.  And even if they did stumble upon this site, they wouldn’t stay here, because the message does not interest them (well, a couple of you guys MIGHT like this topic – but don’t count on me to fix your fuel pump!).

You see, you have to determine WHO you want to ‘sing’ to so that you attract the right audience and keep them mesmerized with your ‘voice’.

What tiny little target market might be interested in what you have to teach with your network marketing product?

Yes, I said teach, because successful online marketing is about educating others about a solution for their problems, challenges, or needs.

If your network marketing company sells greeting cards, then you are going to promote a greeting card product.  Ask yourself who specifically could be your audience?  Well, honestly, I can think of several ‘audiences’ immediately.   How do I do that?  I think about WHAT that product could do for someone with a particular problem.

Notice, I said product and not opportunity, because that would be an entirely different audience (more on that in another blog post).

Here’s another example.

I need to consider the problem of my target audience.  I ask myself, “How could a greeting card help someone?”

Then I write down my ideas:

  • It could be a relationship builder – allowing a friendly and warm exchange of communication
  • It could be a show of gratitude by thanking a customer for their business and making them feel special
  • It could be a referral generating tool, sending a $5 gift card each time a referral comes in prompting them for more referrals
  • It could be a customer retention strategy, providing valuable information in a more personal way,  to keep a customer base attrition to a minimum
  • It could further pre-qualify a lead flow
  • It could be a way to communicate with family and friends
  • It could be a way to set someone apart from typical direct mail

Now, I have started to generate a list of HOW my product could help, but I want to fine tune it to WHO it can help.  I have many choices.  So, I start my list again:

  • Realtors (a specific target audience)
  • Veterinarians
  • Tax Accountants
  • Dentists
  • Small Business Owners (a more general audience)
  • Network marketers
  • People who love to write (a more general audience)
  • Journalists  (a more specific audience)
  • Mothers
  • School teachers
  • Dads

Now, I have something to work with here.  So let’s say I want to start writing content to my target audience to promote my network marketing product.  I’m going to review my list and choose, specifically, veterinarians.  Now, all the content that I write about is going to talk just to THEM and teach them how my product can solve their problem!

All the keywords I use in writing my blog or website, would be giving them good quality information that educates them on the use of a greeting card to further their business and increase their bottom line profitability.

I am ‘singing’ to the right audience.  But I won’t be putting them to sleep, because they will be interested in I what I have to say, as long as I make sure to keep the information valuable to them and to address their specific wants, needs, desires and challenges.

Remember, your writing must be all about YOUR audience.  It must be about them.  Or you will put them to sleep, or they will click off your website, blog or article.

So, one more time, let’s sing in unison, Goodnight Sweetheart Goodnight!
